Things take a strange turn, however, when Joe meets the extremely wealthy Samuel Graynamore (Lloyd Bridges), who invites Joe to sacrifice himself by jumping into an island volcano, in a deal with the island's residents which will allow Graynamore to mine for a valuable mineral.
